Here’s another painting that I’m working on for my upcoming show. It’s not quite finished yet, but it’s almost there. You will be able to see the finished product (as well as my latest work, and a few oldies-but-goodies) at CityArt Gallery on first Friday in September.
I used a different method for this one. Instead of doing an under-painting in black and white, I painted the canvas black and sketched the image on the canvas using white chalk. Then I painted on the color in thin layers. In the areas where there is shadow, I let the black canvas show through. For the highlights and lighter areas, I built up layers of paints to cover the black. Diego Velazquez used a similar method in his paintings.
